User alert

[edit]

If you are going to do a user alert, it should include customizable text per site explaining why that site is problematic. E.g. "Facebook's default license is not a free license, so it cannot be used for Commons" or "Images found on Google are almost always just copies from elsewhere. We need the actual source where Google got the image; Google is typically a pass-through, not a source." - Jmabel ! talk 07:47, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence "Wikimedia Commons does not host media protected by copyright" is also totally wrong. Most content on Commons is still copyrighted. GPSLeo (talk) 08:59, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should be something like "Media protected by copyright can be hosted on Commons only if the copyright-holder has granted a free license that allows both commercial re-use and derivative work (no 'NC' or 'ND' licenses; no unlicensed copyrighted work)." I'd love to see it shorter, but I don't see what to leave out. - Jmabel ! talk 11:30, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Success metrics

[edit]

Do you have a plan in mind for how you're going to measure the effectiveness of these messages? In particular, how do you plan to distinguish between the message dissuading users from uploading non-free media from problematic sites, and the message discouraging users from disclosing where they obtained images?
